Founded to Build!

September 6, 1986- Community residents’ outcry leads to the formation of an organization to build a community center for Uniondale youth.

Following several meetings in the mid- 1990s, among community groups and residents, the Uniondale Community Council voted to form a new organization, and empower it with the mission to build a community center in Uniondale. The effort stemmed from incidents of gang warfare and teenage loitering and delinquency which were spurring some of these encounters. The groups conceded that the lack of safe spaces with productive activities and goals were contributing factors.

The founding of Uniondale Neighborhood Center, Inc. was the tangible outcome of these community engagements in response to finding a place for extra-curricula youth activities.
